Do you want to know more about the origin of Camping International? We'll take you through our history. All of it starts on an apple and pear orchard on the current site of the campground. After the flood disaster of 1953, there was no future for the apple and pear orchard of the Horst family. The orchard was flooded by the salt water of the Oosterschelde and with it the family lost its source of income. A difficult time.
The founding
The brother-in-law Kees, who traveled frequently in Europe with his wife Bertha, had an idea after a camping vacation in Germany. The grounds of the orchard were an ideal place to start a campsite. And so Adrie and Koos Horst, with the help of family, started one of the first recreational businesses in Renesse.
Since the idea of starting a campsite sprang up during a foreign camping vacation, the name of the campsite was easily determined: Camping International. Today, Camping International is a well-known campsite for many families and for Renesse.
From old fruit barn to modern campsite
In the old fruit barn, a laundry room and a little grocery store were made for the guests. The Horst family moved into the attic. Thanks to the steady growth in the number of guests, the laundry facilities were further expanded. In 1976, the old fruit barn made way for a modern laundry facility. And in 2014, the family was able to take over the campsite from its neighbors, who were retiring. This is how Camping International grew into the modern campsite it is today.
Mrs. Gloudemans from the Dutch town of Vught was one of the first camping guests. She and her family made a true trip around the world to get to Renesse. Schouwen-Duiveland was not easy to reach: they had to travel by train, boat and bus. Together with her dog Witty, Mrs. Gloudemans (we call her Aunt Coby) was a regular guest at our campsite.
